Vamp Lab
Vamp Lab is a minimal practice app for musicians: it loops chord progressions with piano, upright bass and metronome, in any key and at any tempo, so players can work on improvisation and phrasing.
Launch
I prototyped Vamp Lab in Figma Make, then moved it into a React and TypeScript codebase built with Vite and deployed on Vercel from GitHub. The audio runs in the browser on the Web Audio API and Tone.js.
It plays recorded grand piano and upright bass samples, timed by a custom scheduler that’s tuned to work on mobile Safari. A walking bass generator writes a new line each time through the loop, leading into every chord change the way a jazz bassist would. The interface uses Radix UI primitives and Motion for animation, and it’s driven by a Figma design system of semantic variables and components.
I developed it with Claude, which connects the Figma file, the code and deployment into one design-to-production workflow.
